Cotton candy sticks to hands and finges, staining them pink.

A toothy grin reveals three missing teeth, but their owner doesn’t care. It’s time for the summer fair.

The air smells like sugar and sweat. There are a million things around for little fingers to grab; a fuzzy pink bunny with bead eyes won on the third try, the string connecting to the translucent orb floating overhead, her father’s chin that is still littered by yesterday’s stubble. The sticky pink sugar spreads to each and marks them as hers.

Sarah is 6, now, and it is her first time here.

Rosy cheeks shine with excitement. What to do first? And then she sees it, like a fluffy pink cloud come down to earth, and she knows.

Her father hands over a few coins, then a lady hands her a stick of cotton candy. It’s the same colour as her dress, which makes the young girl giggle.

She rips off a piece and sticks it in her mouth. The sugar melts and she finally understands what her favourite colour tastes like.
