Summary: Loneliness in moonlight.
Note: Is it my life or my imagination? You figure it out.
The pale skin of a naked thigh was illuminated by the dim glow of moonlight that managed to slip in through the tiny window of the cell-like room as she slipped out of bed. Her dreams had once again chased her from the warm protection of her blankets to find refuge elsewhere.
Bare feet padded across a cool tile floor until she stood before the sink and mirror that stood in one corner of the washroom. The water she splashed upon her face chilled not only her skin, but her very soul. Blinking softly, she looked into the mirror before her and deep into her own eyes. When had they become so empty and lifeless? She couldn’t remember, but was willing to bet they’d been that way for quite some time. Possibly years. Finally, she could bear it no longer and she pushed herself away from the offending glass to head upstairs.
She took a glass from the cupboard once she entered the kitchen and filled it with milk from the fridge. The liquid filled her mouth and she swallowed it. It went down feeling as soft and white as it looked. As a child, she would sometimes imagine that milk was actually moonlight and that she was swallowing a part of the night each time she drank it. Now it was merely a familiar comfort. It eased her heart of all the little pains it went through, yet it did nothing for the numbness that had slowly begun to take it over. Nothing did.
The empty glass was placed on the counter and she stared at it, at the way it caught the faint moonlight which also trickled its way into this room. It looked as though it held the light, but really it was empty. She frowned a little, her finger reaching up to gently trace the edge of the glass.
“I love you.”
Returning to her room, she fell back into her bed, pulling the covers up tight with a soft sigh. Still lonely and still aching.
